On this day March 18 1983 the adventure film High Road to China premiered in theaters. Directed by Brian G Hutton the film starred Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong in a thrilling journey across the world.

Set in the 1920s the story followed a spoiled heiress who hires a rugged World War I pilot to help find her missing father before he is declared legally dead. Featuring exotic locations aerial action and a mix of romance and adventure the film became a modest box office success earning 28.4 million against a 15 million budget.

80s insight: Tom Selleck was originally considered for the role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark but had to turn it down due to his commitment to Magnum PI. High Road to China was seen as his chance to take on a similar swashbuckling adventure role.
