On this day March 17 1989 the sci-fi horror film Leviathan premiered in theaters. Directed by George P. Cosmatos the film starred Peter Weller Richard Crenna Ernie Hudson and Daniel Stern in an underwater thriller that blended elements of Alien and The Thing.

Set in a deep sea mining facility Leviathan followed a crew that discovers a sunken Soviet ship carrying a mysterious genetic experiment. As the crew members become infected by a horrifying mutation the film delivers intense action suspense and practical creature effects that gained it a cult following.

80s insight: Leviathan was one of several underwater-themed sci-fi horror films released in 1989 alongside The Abyss and DeepStar Six all competing for audiences that year.
