On This Day: March 16 1985 Associated Press Newsman Terry Anderson Was Taken Hostage in Beirut Lebanon
On this day March 16 1985 Associated Press correspondent Terry Anderson was kidnapped in Beirut Lebanon by Hezbollah militants backed by Iran. Anderson who was covering the ongoing Lebanese Civil War was ambushed and taken captive while returning from a tennis game.

Anderson remained a hostage for nearly seven years making him the longest-held American hostage during the Lebanon hostage crisis. He was finally released on December 4 1991 following years of negotiations and shifting political conditions in the region.

Fun fact: During his captivity Anderson kept himself mentally engaged by secretly writing a book in his head which he later published as Den of Lions after his release.

Trivia question: What US president was in office when Terry Anderson was finally released in 1991?
