On this day March 14 1981 Eric Clapton was forced to cancel his highly anticipated US tour after being hospitalized for bleeding ulcers. The health scare put the legendary guitarist on a temporary hiatus as he recovered from the serious condition.

Clapton’s struggles with health and substance abuse were well documented during this period but he would return stronger later in the decade continuing his successful career with new music and live performances.

80s insight: Clapton’s next studio album after his recovery Another Ticket was already released in February 1981 featuring the hit I Can't Stand It which became a top 10 rock single.
