On this day March 11 1983 Quiet Riot released their third studio album Metal Health which became a defining record in 80s heavy metal. The album made history by becoming the first heavy metal album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 selling over six million copies worldwide.

Metal Health featured the smash hit Cum on Feel the Noize a cover of the 1973 Slade song which became a massive success and helped bring heavy metal into the mainstream. Other standout tracks included the title track Metal Health (Bang Your Head) which became an anthem for the genre.

80s insight: The album’s iconic hockey mask cover is widely regarded as one of the best album covers of all time helping solidify its place in metal history.
