On this day March 10 1989 the fantasy adventure film The Adventures of Baron Munchausen premiered in theaters. Directed by Terry Gilliam the film starred John Neville as the legendary Baron Munchausen who embarks on a series of wild and fantastical adventures. The cast also included Sarah Polley Eric Idle Jonathan Pryce Oliver Reed and Uma Thurman in one of her earliest roles.

Despite its imaginative storytelling stunning visuals and ambitious special effects the film struggled at the box office earning only 8.1 million against its massive 46.6 million budget. Production issues and studio interference contributed to its financial failure but over time The Adventures of Baron Munchausen gained a cult following for its unique style and Gilliam’s signature surrealism.

Fun fact: Uma Thurman’s role as Venus in the film was inspired by the famous Botticelli painting The Birth of Venus with her introduction in the movie closely resembling the artwork.

Trivia question: What famous comedy troupe was director Terry Gilliam a member of before becoming a filmmaker?
