On This Day: March 1 1982 The Final Episode of In Search of… Aired
On this day March 1 1982 the final episode of In Search of… aired, concluding its six-season run after 144 episodes. The show, which originally aired in syndication, became one of the most intriguing and influential documentary series of its time, exploring mysteries, paranormal phenomena, and unexplained events.

Hosted by Leonard Nimoy, best known as Spock from Star Trek, In Search of… covered a wide range of topics, from UFOs and cryptids like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster to ancient civilizations, lost treasures, and supernatural occurrences. The series used a serious, investigative tone, blending reenactments, expert interviews, and eerie narration that helped define the documentary style of paranormal television.

The show ended in 1982 but its legacy lived on, inspiring later mystery-themed series. In Search of… returned in 2002 on the Sci-Fi Channel with host Mitch Pileggi from The X-Files. In 2018, the History Channel revived the series, with actor Zachary Quinto who played Spock in the Star Trek reboot films stepping in as host.

Fun fact: The eerie theme music for In Search of… was composed by Laurence Rosenthal, who also worked on scores for movies and TV shows including Clash of the Titans (1981).

Trivia question: Leonard Nimoy was not the original host of the In Search of... series. Can you name the famous journalist who hosted the pilot episodes?
