On This Day: March 1 1980 Pink Lady Premiered on NBC
On this day March 1 1980 the variety show Pink Lady premiered on NBC. The series starred the Japanese pop duo Pink Lady, known for their massive success in Japan, and was an ambitious attempt to introduce them to an American audience.

The show featured comedy sketches, musical performances, and celebrity guest stars, all hosted by Pink Lady members Mie and Kei alongside American comedian Jeff Altman. Each episode included appearances from well-known entertainers of the time, including Blondie, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lewis, and Cheap Trick.

Despite NBC’s efforts, Pink Lady struggled with language barriers, as the duo spoke little English and had to memorize their lines phonetically. The unusual mix of cultures and styles resulted in low ratings, leading to the show’s cancellation after only six episodes.

Pink Lady remains a fascinating part of television history, often remembered as one of the most bizarre and ambitious variety shows of the era.

Fun fact: The full title of the show was Pink Lady and Jeff, referencing comedian Jeff Altman, who was added to help bridge the cultural gap between the Japanese stars and American audiences.

Trivia question: Pink Lady was one of the shortest-lived variety shows in TV history. Can you name another 1980s variety show that had a short run despite featuring major celebrities?
