On This Day: June 27 1986 - Ruthless People Premieres in Theaters
On this day June 27 1986, the dark comedy Ruthless People premiered in theaters. Directed by the trio of Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker, the film brought together outrageous characters, fast pacing, and twisted humor into one of the most unique comedies of the decade.

Starring Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater, Bette Midler, Anita Morris, and Bill Pullman in his film debut, the story centers on a kidnapping that does not go as planned and a husband who is more than happy to see his wife held for ransom. The film was made on a nine million dollar budget and became a major success, grossing over seventy one million dollars at the box office.

80s insight: Ruthless People showed that dark humor and offbeat storytelling could work in mainstream movies when backed by a strong cast and clever writing. It became a signature example of 80s comedy pushing boundaries.
