On This Day: June 17, 1985 - Sting Releases His Debut Solo Album The Dream of the Blue Turtles
On this day June 17, 1985, Sting released his debut solo album The Dream of the Blue Turtles. Following his massive success with The Police, this album marked a bold and creative shift as Sting explored jazz influences, political themes, and a more personal songwriting style.

The album reached number 2 on the US Billboard 200 and went on to sell over 3 million copies. It hit number 1 in Italy, the Netherlands, and Australia, and featured standout tracks like If You Love Somebody Set Them Free, Fortress Around Your Heart, and Russians. With a band of top jazz musicians backing him, Sting successfully redefined himself as a serious solo artist.

Fun fact: The album was recorded in only six weeks at Le Studio in Quebec and included members of jazz great Wynton Marsalis’s band, helping Sting earn critical acclaim for both ambition and artistry.
