On This Day: June 17, 1983 - The Police Release Synchronicity
On this day June 17, 1983, the Police released their fifth and final studio album Synchronicity. It marked the height of their global success and also the end of their time as an active recording band.

Synchronicity hit number 1 on the US Billboard 200 charts and also reached number 1 in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Driven by the massive hit Every Breath You Take, the album showcased the band’s growth into more complex and layered arrangements while maintaining their signature intensity.

The album sold over 8 million copies in the United States alone and received multiple Grammy Awards. Other standout tracks included King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger and the title track Synchronicity II. The tension within the band during recording was well documented, making the album’s polished sound even more remarkable.

80s insight: Synchronicity was a defining moment in 80s music, closing out the Police’s career with a record that perfectly balanced art rock ambition and pop success.
