On this day June 15, 1989, Nirvana released their debut album Bleach on the independent label Sub Pop. Recorded for just over six hundred dollars, the album introduced the raw and heavy sound that would later evolve into the grunge movement of the early 90s.
Bleach reached number 89 on the Billboard charts, but it would gain much more recognition after the band’s breakout success with Nevermind in 1991. The album featured songs like About a Girl, Love Buzz and School, showing off Kurt Cobain’s gritty guitar work and emotional songwriting. While the album leaned more toward sludge metal and punk influences, it already hinted at the melodic sensibility that would soon define Nirvana’s rise.
This release marked the beginning of one of the most important bands of the coming decade and helped establish Seattle’s underground scene on a national level.
80s insight: Bleach arrived just before the 80s ended, carrying the spirit of rebellion and raw sound that would soon change everything in rock music.
