On This Day: June 1, 1980 - CNN Launches as the First 24-Hour News Network
On this day June 1, 1980, Cable News Network (CNN) made its official debut, becoming the first television channel in history to offer 24-hour news coverage. Founded by media mogul Ted Turner, CNN revolutionized the way news was delivered and consumed, providing real-time reporting around the clock at a time when other networks aired news only at scheduled intervals.

The channel launched from its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and quickly set a new standard for breaking news coverage. CNN’s debut marked a turning point in media history, paving the way for nonstop global news access and changing how the world stayed informed.

Fun fact: CNN's very first newscast began with the words, “Good evening, I’m David Walker,” and was followed by co-anchor Lois Hart delivering the lead story.
