On This Day: July 6, 1983 - Class Premiered in Theaters
On this day July 6, 1983, Class premiered in theaters and introduced audiences to a new generation of young actors through a story that mixed romantic drama with prep school tension. Directed by Lewis John Carlino, the film starred Rob Lowe as a wealthy boarding school student whose best friend, played by Andrew McCarthy in his film debut, unknowingly begins an affair with Lowe’s mother, portrayed by Jacqueline Bisset.

Class also marked the film debuts of John Cusack, Virginia Madsen, and Alan Ruck, each of whom would go on to become recognizable faces throughout the decade. The movie stood out for its mix of sharp writing, upscale setting, and adult themes that challenged the boundaries of the typical teen film format. While some critics were divided, the film’s cast and dramatic tension helped it find an audience.

Class earned 21.6 million dollars at the box office and remains a notable entry in the early careers of several 80s stars. You can join the conversation in our Class (1983) movie thread.
