On This Day July 29 1983 – National Lampoon’s Vacation Premiered in Theaters
On this day July 29 1983, National Lampoon’s Vacation premiered in theaters and kicked off one of the most beloved comedy franchises of the decade. The film follows the hilarious misadventures of the Griswold family as they embark on a cross country trip to the fictional Walley World theme park. Packed with travel disasters, unexpected detours, and classic slapstick humor, the film became a defining road trip comedy of the 1980s.

Written by John Hughes and directed by Harold Ramis, the movie starred Chevy Chase as the well-meaning but increasingly unhinged Clark Griswold. Vacation struck a chord with audiences who related to the chaos of family travel and loved the offbeat characters and quotable one-liners. It was a box office hit that paved the way for multiple sequels.

80s insight: By 1983 comedy films focused on relatable suburban chaos were booming and Vacation turned the American family road trip into a pop culture milestone.
