On this day July 22 1988, Big Top Pee Wee premiered in theaters as the follow up to the beloved cult hit Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Directed by Randal Kleiser, the film once again starred Paul Reubens as Pee Wee Herman, this time trading his familiar suburban world for life on a farm that gets turned upside down by a traveling circus.
Unlike its predecessor, Big Top Pee Wee leaned more into fantasy and romance, showing Pee Wee trying to balance life as an inventor and farmer while falling for trapeze artist Gina Piccolapupula, played by Valeria Golino. Kris Kristofferson, Penelope Ann Miller, and a host of quirky circus performers rounded out the cast.
While the movie captured some of the oddball charm fans expected, it struggled to find the same magic as the original. It underperformed at the box office and received mixed reviews, but it remains a memorable part of Pee Wee’s legacy and an example of just how experimental late 80s family films could be.
80s insight: Big Top Pee Wee reminded us that sequels in the 80s often took wild creative swings. Even if it did not match the original, it kept Pee Wee’s world delightfully strange.
