On This Day: July 1, 1985 - Dif Juz Releases Extractions
On this day July 1, 1985, British instrumental band Dif Juz released their third album Extractions, a richly textured and atmospheric record that stood out in the post punk and ambient scenes of the 1980s. Released on the 4AD label, the album was produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins and carried his influence in its dreamy, layered production.

Unlike their earlier works which leaned more heavily into ambient and dub, Extractions added structure and emotional weight to the band’s sound. With lush guitars, echoing drums, and sparse yet powerful arrangements, the album created moods without words and conveyed a cinematic sense of space.

Though not a mainstream hit, Extractions was highly regarded by fans of experimental and ambient music. It became a touchstone in the 4AD catalog and remains a standout example of instrumental storytelling during a decade filled with sonic exploration.

80s insight: Extractions proved that not all great 80s albums needed vocals. Dif Juz showed that atmosphere, tone, and emotion could speak just as loud through pure sound.
