On This Day: February 28 1986 Greed by Swans Was Released
On this day February 28 1986 Swans released their third studio album Greed, marking a shift in their sound while maintaining the band’s signature intensity. Known for their early brutal, industrial, and noise-driven style, Swans began incorporating more structured compositions and atmospheric elements on this album, setting the stage for their later experimental work.

Greed was the first Swans album to prominently feature Jarboe, whose haunting vocals contrasted with Michael Gira’s deep, commanding delivery. The album’s themes of power, control, and capitalism were reflected in its relentless, hypnotic rhythms and crushing instrumentation. Songs like Money Is Flesh and Time Is Money (Bastard) exemplified the band’s unrelenting approach, with pounding percussion and droning bass lines.

Though Greed didn’t achieve mainstream success, it became an important part of Swans’ evolution, influencing later industrial and post-rock artists. The album, along with its companion Holy Money, helped transition the band toward a more dynamic and atmospheric sound, leading to the Children of God era.

Fun fact: Greed and its follow-up Holy Money were some of the first Swans albums to introduce melody and more traditional song structures, paving the way for their later experimental and post-rock works.

Trivia question: Swans’ frontman Michael Gira later founded a record label that released music from experimental and underground artists. Can you name the label?
