On This Day: February 27 1985 The Final Episode of E/R Aired
On this day February 27 1985 the final episode of the sitcom E/R aired, ending its one-season run with 22 episodes. The show starred George Clooney and Mary McDonnell, both of whom would later appear in the more well-known 90s medical drama ER.

E/R was a medical comedy series set in a busy Chicago emergency room, blending humor with the daily chaos of hospital life. Unlike its later dramatic counterpart, this show focused on the lighter side of medicine, featuring quirky doctors, eccentric patients, and fast-paced comedic situations. Despite its talented cast and unique premise, E/R struggled with ratings and was ultimately canceled after one season.

While the show itself faded into obscurity, it is remembered today for featuring George Clooney in a medical setting nearly a decade before his breakout role as Dr. Doug Ross on ER.

Fun fact: Mary McDonnell and George Clooney were both part of E/R but didn’t share much screen time together. When they reunited for the 90s drama ER, McDonnell guest-starred as Dr. Eleanor Carter, the mother of Noah Wyle’s character, Dr. John Carter.

Trivia question: Before his breakout role in ER, George Clooney appeared in several TV shows throughout the 80s. Can you name the popular 80s sitcom in which he played a handyman named Booker?
