On This Day: February 26 1988 Frantic Was Released in the US
On this day February 26 1988 the thriller Frantic was released. Directed by Roman Polanski the film starred Harrison Ford in a tense mystery set in Paris alongside Emmanuelle Seigner. Known for its slow-burning suspense and atmospheric cinematography Frantic blended neo-noir and psychological thriller elements making it a unique entry in Ford’s filmography.

The story followed Dr. Richard Walker an American doctor visiting Paris for a medical conference with his wife. After she mysteriously disappears from their hotel room Walker embarks on a desperate search uncovering a tangled web of espionage deception and danger. The film’s moody tone and gripping pacing kept audiences engaged as Ford’s character unraveled the mystery.

With a budget of 20 million dollars, Frantic underperformed at the box office earning 17.6 million dollars. However it received positive reviews for Ford’s intense performance and Polanski’s masterful direction. Over time the film has gained a reputation as an underrated thriller from the late 80s.

Fun fact: The song I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango) by Grace Jones played during one of the film’s key moments and became closely associated with Frantic’s noir-like atmosphere.

Trivia question: Harrison Ford is best known for his roles in major franchises but Frantic was one of his lesser-known dramatic thrillers. Can you name another thriller he starred in during the 1990s?
