On This Day: February 26 1988 Bloodsport Premiered in Theaters
On this day February 26 1988 Bloodsport premiered in theaters introducing audiences to Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first major starring role. The martial arts action film became a cult classic and helped establish Van Damme as one of the biggest action stars of the late 80s and 90s.

Bloodsport was inspired by the supposed real-life story of Frank Dux, an American martial artist who claimed to have participated in a secret underground fighting tournament known as the Kumite. The film followed Van Damme as Dux competing against the world’s toughest fighters in a no-holds-barred competition while evading military officers trying to bring him back to duty.

Filled with intense fight sequences and Van Damme’s signature split kicks, Bloodsport became an instant favorite among martial arts and action fans. Although it received mixed reviews from critics, it performed well at the box office and later gained a huge following through home video releases.

Fun fact: Bloodsport was one of the first American films to showcase Muay Thai, helping introduce the martial art to a wider audience.

Trivia question: Bloodsport launched Jean-Claude Van Damme’s career, but before becoming an action star, he worked in Hollywood doing another job. Can you name what he did before acting?
