On this day February 24 1989 Bert Rigby, Youre a Fool was released a musical comedy directed by Carl Reiner. Starring Robert Lindsay the film followed the story of a British coal miner with dreams of making it big in show business.

The movie combined slapstick comedy musical numbers and classic Hollywood tributes as Bert Rigby played by Robert Lindsay leaves his small town to chase fame in America. Alongside Lindsay the cast included Robbie Coltrane Jackie Gayle Bruno Kirby Corbin Bernsen and Anne Bancroft.

Despite having a budget of 7 million dollars Bert Rigby, Youre a Fool struggled at the box office earning only 75000 dollars. The film was praised for its charm and its homage to classic musicals but it failed to find a wide audience upon release.

80s insight: Carl Reiner originally envisioned the film as a tribute to the golden age of Hollywood musicals inspired by his love for classic song and dance films.
