On This Day: February 23 1988 A 13 Year Old Lauryn Hill Made Her Television Debut on Showtime at the Apollo
On this day February 23 1988 a 13 year old Lauryn Hill made her television debut on Showtime at the Apollo during Amateur Night. Before becoming a Grammy winning artist with The Fugees and a successful solo career Hill took the stage at the legendary Apollo Theater to showcase her talent. However the notoriously tough crowd gave her a harsh welcome booing her performance.

Despite the rocky start Hill showed resilience and continued to pursue her passion for music. Just a few years later she joined The Fugees alongside Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel leading to the massive success of their 1996 album The Score which featured hits like Killing Me Softly and Ready or Not. Her solo career reached even greater heights with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998 which earned her multiple Grammy Awards and is still regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time.

Her experience at the Apollo became a defining moment proving that setbacks can be stepping stones to greatness.

Fun fact: Lauryn Hill was not the only major artist to get booed at the Apollo. Even James Brown and Stevie Wonder faced tough crowds early in their careers before becoming legends.

Trivia question: Before joining The Fugees Lauryn Hill appeared in a 1993 film playing a major role. Can you name the movie she starred in
