On This Day February 20 1987 - David Hartman Quit Good Morning America After 11 Seasons
On February 20, 1987, David Hartman, the original host of Good Morning America, bid farewell to the show after 11 successful seasons. Hartman, who had been with the program since its debut in 1975, played a major role in shaping GMA into one of the most popular morning shows in television history.

A former actor turned television journalist, Hartman brought warmth, professionalism, and credibility to the morning news format. Under his leadership, Good Morning America became the top rated morning show in the late 70s and early 80s, competing directly with Today. His departure marked the end of an era for the program, as ABC looked to refresh the lineup for a new generation of viewers.

Following his exit, Hartman transitioned into documentary work, staying active in television but moving away from the daily news cycle. His contributions to morning television helped lay the foundation for what Good Morning America remains today.

80s insight: David Hartman had no journalism experience before hosting Good Morning America. He was originally an actor, best known for starring in the 1969 TV series The Bold Ones: The New Doctors.
