On This Day: February 18, 1983 The Pirates of Penzance Premiered in Theaters in the United States
On this day, February 18, 1983, The Pirates of Penzance premiered in theaters in the United States. Based on the classic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, the film adaptation featured an all-star cast, including Kevin Kline, Angela Lansbury, George Rose, Rex Smith, and Linda Ronstadt.

The film was a direct adaptation of the hit 1980 Broadway revival, bringing the swashbuckling musical comedy to the big screen. It followed young Frederic (Smith), who, upon turning 21, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of pirates—only to discover that he may still be bound by contract due to a technicality. With humor, romance, and rousing musical numbers, The Pirates of Penzance delivered an energetic and faithful take on the beloved stage production.

Despite critical praise and strong performances, the film struggled at the box office, earning just $694,000. However, it remains a cult favorite, especially among fans of musical theater. Kevin Kline’s performance as the charismatic Pirate King became one of his most celebrated early roles.

Fun fact: Linda Ronstadt, better known as a rock and pop singer, impressed audiences with her operatic vocal range in the role of Mabel.

Trivia question: What year was the original Pirates of Penzance operetta first performed?
