On this day August 29 1988, the World Wrestling Federation held the very first SummerSlam event at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Created as the WWF’s summer answer to WrestleMania, the pay per view brought together some of the biggest names in professional wrestling and delivered a packed card filled with energy, drama, and spectacle.

The main event featured Hulk Hogan teaming with Macho Man Randy Savage as the Mega Powers to take on The Mega Bucks, consisting of Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant. With Jesse Ventura as the special guest referee, the match was a wild and entertaining finish to a show that helped launch SummerSlam as a yearly tradition.

Other standout matches included The Ultimate Warrior’s shocking win over The Honky Tonk Man to capture the Intercontinental Championship in under thirty seconds, instantly making him a fan favorite.
