On This Day August 13 1986 – MC Hammer Released His Debut Album Feel My Power
On this day August 13 1986, MC Hammer released his debut album Feel My Power. Independently produced and distributed through his own label, the album introduced a high energy style that would later help bring hip hop into the pop mainstream. Feel My Power was a regional success in California, where Hammer gained attention for his flashy performances, rapid fire delivery, and danceable beats. The album featured tracks like Let's Get It Started and Ring 'Em, showcasing his blend of party friendly lyrics, crowd control, and heavy funk influences.

Hammer sold the album out of the trunk of his car and through word of mouth, helping him build a loyal local following. His hustle and showmanship led to Capitol Records taking notice, and many of the songs on this album would later be reworked for his major label breakthrough.

Though not a chart topper, Feel My Power was an early indicator of the charisma and crossover appeal that would soon make MC Hammer a household name. It marked the beginning of his rise from Oakland rapper to global pop culture figure.

80s insight: MC Hammer’s debut proved that independent hip hop could break through with energy, hustle, and a unique sound that demanded attention.
