On This Day: April 9, 1981 - Checking In Premiered on CBS
On this day April 9, 1981, the sitcom Checking In premiered on CBS. A spin off from The Jeffersons, the show starred Marla Gibbs reprising her role as Florence Johnston, the wisecracking maid who quickly became one of the most beloved characters on television during her time on The Jeffersons.

In Checking In, Florence leaves her job with George and Louise Jefferson to become the executive housekeeper at the St. Frederick Hotel. The show followed her new adventures managing a quirky staff and dealing with hotel guests, all while delivering the same sharp wit and charm that made her a fan favorite. Despite strong talent and the popularity of Florence’s character, the show struggled with ratings and was canceled after just 4 episodes. Marla Gibbs later returned to The Jeffersons, and Florence remained a regular character until the series ended in 1985.

Fun fact: Marla Gibbs missed only one episode of The Jeffersons while filming Checking In, showing just how quickly the show came and went.

Trivia question: What hit sitcom did Checking In spin off from, bringing back the character Florence Johnston?
