On This Day: April 8, 1988 - Above the Law Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 8, 1988, the action thriller Above the Law premiered in theaters, marking the film debut of martial artist Steven Seagal. Directed by Andrew Davis, the movie introduced audiences to Seagal’s signature blend of aikido fueled fight scenes, cool intensity, and tough guy attitude.

The film followed Nico Toscani, a former CIA operative turned Chicago cop who uncovers a government conspiracy while taking on drug dealers and corrupt agents. The cast also included Pam Grier and Sharon Stone, both adding depth and presence to the gritty urban story. With a budget of 7.5 million dollars, Above the Law brought in 18.8 million at the box office and launched Seagal into the spotlight as one of the era’s rising action stars. The movie’s hard hitting style and real world tone made it stand out from the flashier action films of the time.

Fun fact: Above the Law was co written by Seagal and based loosely on his own background in martial arts and alleged ties to intelligence work.

Trivia question: What martial arts based action star made his film debut in Above the Law?
