On This Day: April 6, 1984 - Ultravox Released Lament
On this day April 6, 1984, Ultravox released their seventh studio album Lament, continuing their run as one of the leading bands in the synth driven new wave scene. Known for their atmospheric sound and stylish visuals, Ultravox leaned into both emotional songwriting and polished production with this release.

Lament reached number 115 on the US Billboard 200 and performed much stronger in the UK and Europe, where the band had a more devoted following. The album included singles like Dancing with Tears in My Eyes, One Small Day, and the title track Lament, each reflecting the band’s blend of cinematic soundscapes and thoughtful lyrics. By this point, Ultravox had fully embraced the evolving synth pop direction of the 80s, and Lament added a touch of melancholy and maturity to their catalog.

Fun fact: Dancing with Tears in My Eyes became one of Ultravox’s most successful UK singles and was inspired by the fear of nuclear war, a common theme in 80s pop culture.

Trivia question: What single from the Lament album became one of Ultravox’s highest charting hits in the UK?
