On April 28, 1989, the supernatural horror film The Horror Show was released in theaters. Directed by James Isaac, the movie starred Lance Henriksen as Detective Lucas McCarthy, a man haunted by the vengeful spirit of a serial killer he helped capture, played by Brion James.
Although it was marketed in the United States as a standalone film, The Horror Show is internationally known as House III and is part of the House film series. Unlike the earlier entries, this film took a much darker and more graphic approach, focusing on psychological terror and intense scares instead of the mix of comedy and horror that had defined the series up to that point. While it did not achieve major box office success, it has gained a cult following among fans of late 80s horror.
Fun fact: The Horror Show was released just a few weeks before Wes Craven’s Shocker, another horror film with a very similar story about an executed killer coming back from the dead for revenge.
