On This Day: April 28, 1989 - K-9 Hits Theaters
On April 28, 1989, the action comedy K-9 starring James Belushi was released in theaters. Directed by Rod Daniel, the movie followed Detective Michael Dooley who teams up with an unusual partner, a German Shepherd named Jerry Lee, to take down a powerful drug dealer.

The chemistry between Belushi and his canine co-star made the movie a hit with audiences. Even though the budget details are not widely available, K-9 pulled in a strong 78.2 million dollars at the box office. The success of the film led to several sequels and made it one of the popular buddy cop films of the late 80s.

Fun fact: The dog who played Jerry Lee was a real life police dog named Koton who had actually helped capture a suspect in a shooting before being cast in the movie.
