On This Day: April 24, 1981 - Ms. 45 Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 24, 1981, the cult revenge thriller Ms. 45 premiered in theaters. Directed by Abel Ferrara and starring Zoe Tamerlis, Steve Singer, and Jack Thibeau, the film followed a mute garment worker in New York City who becomes a vigilante after experiencing two brutal assaults in one day.

Ms. 45 gained notoriety for its gritty realism, stark violence, and raw portrayal of urban isolation. Zoe Tamerlis delivered a powerful performance with no spoken lines, relying entirely on expression and presence. The film quickly became a staple in exploitation cinema and later earned praise for its feminist undertones and unflinching approach to trauma and vengeance. Although it only made 62 thousand dollars at the box office during its limited release, Ms. 45 would go on to become a cult favorite, especially among fans of underground and independent cinema.

Fun fact: Zoe Tamerlis not only starred in the film but later co wrote projects with Abel Ferrara, becoming one of his most trusted collaborators.

Trivia question: What mute character driven thriller from 1981 featured Zoe Tamerlis in a lead role and became a cult classic despite a limited theatrical release?
