On This Day: April 2, 1987 - Apple Town Monogatari Released in Japan
On this day April 2, 1987, SquareSoft released Apple Town Monogatari in Japan, a lesser known title in the company’s early catalog long before it became a global RPG powerhouse. Released exclusively for Japanese platforms, the game was a unique mix of simulation and storytelling that reflected everyday life far from the fantasy and sci fi themes Square would later be famous for.

Apple Town Monogatari allowed players to experience slice of life scenarios through simple, character driven gameplay. It was considered a “miscellaneous” genre game, one that didn’t fit the usual categories of action or adventure but still offered something charming and different for its time.

Though it never saw an international release, it’s an interesting part of SquareSoft’s history and shows how the company experimented with various styles and themes before striking gold with the Final Fantasy series.

Fun fact: Apple Town Monogatari was based on the Japanese manga series Little Memole and aimed to appeal to a younger, casual gaming audience.

Trivia question: What company released Apple Town Monogatari before becoming world famous for the Final Fantasy franchise?
