On this day April 2 1982 the comedy drama Some Kind of Hero premiered in theaters. Directed by Michael Pressman the film starred Richard Pryor as a Vietnam War veteran returning home only to face bureaucratic struggles and a society that has moved on without him.

Margot Kidder and Ray Sharkey co starred in the film which blended serious themes with Pryor’s signature humor. The story explored issues like PTSD reintegration and the challenges veterans face while also delivering moments of heart and levity. With a budget of $8 million the film performed well at the box office earning $23.6 million and showcased a more dramatic side of Richard Pryor’s acting ability.

80s insight: Some Kind of Hero was one of the first roles where Richard Pryor took on a more serious and emotional character outside of his usual comedic roles.
