On This Day: April 19, 1987 - The Simpsons Premiered as a Short on The Tracey Ullman Show
On this day April 19, 1987, The Simpsons made their first appearance as a series of short animated sketches on The Tracey Ullman Show. Created by Matt Groening, the earliest version of the famous family looked rough around the edges but quickly captured attention with its unique humor and offbeat charm.

These short segments introduced viewers to Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie in two minute clips that aired during commercial breaks. Just two years later, the shorts were spun off into a full length prime time series and the rest is television history. The Simpsons went on to become the longest running sitcom in American history, airing for over three decades and shaping pop culture across generations.

Fun fact: Matt Groening named the characters after members of his own family, using his parents’ and sisters’ names, and changing his own to Bart as an anagram for brat.

Trivia question: What legendary animated series first appeared as a short on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987?
