On This Day: April 19, 1984 - Advance Australia Fair Became the Official National Anthem
On this day April 19, 1984, Australia officially adopted Advance Australia Fair as its national anthem, replacing God Save the Queen. The decision came after a nationwide vote where the public chose the new anthem to better reflect the country’s identity and independence.

Alongside the anthem, green and gold were also formally recognized as Australia’s national colors. These colors had already been popular in sports uniforms and symbols and became a proud part of Australia’s image on the world stage.

The anthem change marked a major cultural shift for Australia during the 1980s, highlighting a growing sense of national pride and a move toward a more distinct Australian voice in global affairs.

Fun fact: Advance Australia Fair was originally written in 1878 by Scottish composer Peter Dodds McCormick and was first performed in public in 1878, long before becoming the anthem over a century later.
