On This Day: April 17, 1987 - Rygar Released on Famicom in Japan
April 17, 1987 marked the Japanese release of Rygar on the Famicom. Originally an arcade title from 1986, this version was a total reimagining. Instead of a straightforward side-scrolling action game, the Famicom version mixed platforming, top-down exploration, RPG elements, and permanent power-ups, making it one of the more ambitious action-adventure titles of its time.

Players took control of the resurrected warrior Rygar, wielding the iconic Diskarmor weapon, and journeyed across the mystical land of Argool to defeat the evil Ligar. The game featured a day-to-night cycle, an open world structure, and light stat building, which would influence other adventure games for years to come.

Though it wouldn’t hit the NES in North America until 1987, the Famicom version made a big splash for its gameplay depth and replay value, especially compared to other action games from the era.

Fun fact: The Diskarmor weapon in Rygar was originally inspired by a yo-yo and became one of the most recognizable video game weapons of the 8-bit era.

Trivia question: What is the name of the evil being that Rygar must defeat in the game?
