On This Day: April 17, 1987 - Argus (Rygar) Released in Japan
On this day April 17, 1987, Argus was released in Japan for Nintendo NES. Western audiences know it better as Rygar, a cult classic action-adventure game that quickly earned a fanbase for its unique gameplay blend and mythical storyline. Developed and published by Tecmo, the game offered a combination of side-scrolling action with RPG elements something that was still relatively fresh at the time.

Set in a fantastical world ruled by the evil Ligar, Rygar challenged players to wield the iconic Diskarmor and journey through both side-scrolling and overhead levels. What made Rygar stand out was the lack of a save or password feature, meaning players had to complete the whole adventure in one go. Despite that, the game was beloved for its tight controls, haunting soundtrack, and mysterious tone.

It would go on to influence several future titles in the action-adventure genre and continues to be remembered as a gem of the 8-bit era.

Fun fact: Although originally released in arcades in 1986, the console version of Rygar for the NES was completely reimagined with deeper gameplay and exploration elements.

Trivia question: What is the name of the weapon used by the main character in Rygar?
