On This Day: April 15, 1988 - Brain Damage Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 15, 1988, the cult horror film Brain Damage premiered in theaters. Directed by Frank Henenlotter, known for his offbeat and gruesome style, the film starred Rick Hearst, Jennifer Lowry, and Gordon MacDonald in a bizarre tale that blended horror, dark comedy, and surreal visuals.

The story followed a young man named Brian who becomes the unwilling host to a parasitic creature named Aylmer. This strange, talking organism injects a powerful hallucinogenic fluid into Brian’s brain, giving him euphoric highs but in exchange, it feeds on the brains of other people.

Brain Damage quickly gained cult status for its wild practical effects, over the top gore, and twisted sense of humor. It was a commentary on addiction and control, wrapped in a pulpy, midnight movie package that’s still discussed by horror fans today.

Fun fact: The voice of Aylmer was performed by legendary horror host John Zacherle, adding an extra layer of campy charm to the film’s bizarre tone.

Trivia question: What 1988 cult horror film featured a talking parasite named Aylmer and was directed by Frank Henenlotter?
