On This Day: April 14, 1989 - Say Anything Premiered in Theaters
On this day April 14, 1989, the classic teen romance Say Anything premiered in theaters, marking the directorial debut of Cameron Crowe. Starring John Cusack as underachieving but big hearted Lloyd Dobler and Ione Skye as the brilliant and beautiful Diane Court, the film became one of the most beloved coming of age stories of the decade.

Say Anything stood out for its honest character driven story and its memorable scenes> One scene in particular was the iconic moment where Lloyd stands outside Diane’s window holding a boombox over his head while Peter Gabriel’s In Your Eyes plays. The film captured the hopes, fears, and awkward sweetness of young love in a way that still resonates today.

It had strong performances and sharp writing, Say Anything helped launch Crowe’s directing career and remains a defining film for both the actors and 80s teen cinema as a whole.

Fun fact: The dojo used in the kickboxing scene with Lloyd is the same one used in The Karate Kid.

Trivia question: What 1989 romantic comedy featured a famous boombox scene and starred John Cusack as a kickboxing high school graduate?
