On This Day: April 12, 1987 - 21 Jump Street Premiered on FOX
On this day April 12, 1987, 21 Jump Street premiered on FOX and quickly became one of the network’s first breakout hits. The show followed a group of young undercover cops who were assigned to infiltrate high schools and colleges to investigate crimes involving teenagers. Its blend of action, drama, and real life issues gave it a unique place in the growing lineup of edgy late 80s TV.

The series starred Johnny Depp, whose role as Officer Tom Hanson turned him into a teen idol almost overnight. Alongside him were Richard Grieco, Holly Robinson, Peter DeLuise, and Dustin Nguyen, forming a cast that brought both style and heart to each episode. 21 Jump Street ran for 5 seasons with 103 episodes and tackled serious topics like drug abuse, violence, and identity while keeping its fast paced undercover vibe. It helped establish FOX as a network willing to take risks and gave the 80s one of its most iconic crime dramas.

Fun fact: Johnny Depp didn’t expect the show to take off and originally took the role just to pay the bills he became the face of the series and a breakout star.
