On This Day: April 12, 1982 - John Cougar Released American Fool
On this day April 12, 1982, John Cougar released his fifth studio album American Fool, the record that launched him into rock superstardom. Fueled by two of the biggest singles of the decade, Hurts so Good and Jack and Diane, the album climbed to number 1 on the US Billboard 200 and became the best selling album of 1982 in the United States.

American Fool blended heartland rock with catchy hooks and down to earth storytelling, capturing the spirit of small town America in a way that connected with fans across the country. The album’s success turned John Cougar soon to reclaim his full name John Mellencamp into a household name and a voice for working class youth during the early 80s. American Fool became a defining album of the decade and solidified Cougar’s place in rock history.

Fun fact: Jack and Diane spent four weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and almost didn’t make it onto the album until it was heavily reworked in the studio.

Trivia question: What 1982 album by John Cougar featured the number 1 hit Jack and Diane and became the top selling album in the United States that year?
